Walmart formally launched its Great Value line of LED light bulbs at its brick-and-mortar stores today across the country, apart from showcasing the collection online. The exercise is very similar to the 2006 promotional retail campaign to sell 100 million highly efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), which achieved the intended goal well before the deadline.

The Great Value line features 26 different types of LED bulbs under $10. The cheapest product in this array is a non-dimmable 60-watt bulb priced at $8.88, with the dimmable variant costing an additional dollar. The ability to control the amount of light not only improves aesthetics, but also doubles up as an energy-saver.

In addition to introducing the Great Value line, Walmart has further strengthened its ties with GE by introducing a new dimmable LED from the company, competitively priced under $11. Both companies have till date focused on enhancing the efficiencies of Walmart facilities by making the best use of GE’s lighting technology. This fortified partnership, however, is expected to widen the markets for affordable LEDs very much on the same lines as the Cree – Home Depot pact that featured Cree 60-watt equivalent LEDs for $12.97 during the last year.

Market analysis has revealed the increasing popularity of LED lighting, forecasting a tremendous growth over the next five years. Compared to the previous year, LED product prices have fallen considerably. With evolving semi-conductor technologies and efficient manufacturing techniques scaling up to meet potential demand, the price points are bound to work in favor of both the industry and the consumer.
