The Wildlife Lighting Program was developed by the Department of the Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to address light pollution issues in ecologically sensitive areas while ensuring human safety and security.

As a Florida based company, KLUS, LLC takes our commitment to protecting the natural landscape and wildlife very seriously. KLUS’ certified wildlife lighting solutions minimize one of the major ecological impacts on turtles and other coastal inhabitants: light pollution. KLUS tapes utilize LEDs above the 560nm wavelength in amber so that emitted light will not be visible to a variety of animal species. Regular light pollution can radically pose a major threat to every level of an ecosystem.

Minimizing light directly visible (coastal properties, flashlights, interior light, etc.) and indirectly visible (reflective light and sky glow) from the beach is important for the survival of the many species. This starts with removing any unnecessary lights from a property that are used purely for decorative purposes. All remaining lighting should follow the rules developed by the state of Florida, with help from scientists and technical advisors, to reduce the effects of artificial light on sea turtles.

KEEP IT LOW: Use low mounting height, wattage, and lumens. Flood, spot, and pole lighting are highly discouraged.

KEEP IT SHIELDED: Shield fixtures so you cannot see the source of light. Shielding also helps direct the light down to the ground where it is needed.

PDS4-PLUS LED Lighting Extrusion

KEEP IT LONG– Sea turtles are less disturbed by the long wavelengths of light (560 nanometers or longer).
