Google the term Perovskite or organometal halide perovskites and you’ll find very long  scientific descriptions, and complicated chemical composition models.  Chemistry definitions aside, one of the reasons that Perovskites are exciting, is because in 5 years or perhaps even less, LED Lights based on perovskites could be commercially available.

Why is that exciting?  Well, the main reason is that the process to make these types of LED is far less complicated, and remarkably clean.
Zhi-Kuang Tan, lead author and graduate student at The University Of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory, says in a university press release:

“It’s remarkable that this material can be easily tuned to emit light in a variety of colors, which makes it extremely useful for color displays, lighting and optical communication applications.” “This technology could provide a lot of value to the ever growing flat-panel display industry.”
